In a town built where US 1 meets SR 200, people tend to be practical about hard things, and divorce is a hard thing. You want to know what it costs, what happens first, and whether you will be driving to Yulee every other week. Fair questions. We quote one fixed price in writing before you hire us, and that price does not quietly grow.

One call gets it moving. Call Good Life Legal's Jacksonville office at 904-999-4010, or complete the form on this page and we will call you.

The Plain-English Answer for Callahan

A Callahan divorce is usually a Nassau County case. It starts when one spouse files a petition with the Nassau County Clerk of Courts stating the marriage is irretrievably broken. Florida is a no-fault state, so nobody has to prove the other did wrong. The court needs two things:

  • Grounds: the marriage must be irretrievably broken, the no-fault standard set by Fla. Stat. § 61.052.
  • Residency: at least one spouse must have lived in Florida for the six months before filing, under Fla. Stat. § 61.021.

Local pro tip: Plenty of Callahan families work in Jacksonville, but a paycheck across the Duval County line does not decide where you file. Where a case is filed generally follows where the two of you last lived together as a couple, not where either of you works. For most Callahan couples that means Nassau County, and nearly all of it can be handled electronically.

Thirty Minutes From the Courthouse, and Most of It Avoidable

The Robert M. Foster Justice Center on Veterans Way in Yulee is roughly 30 minutes east of Callahan, out SR 200 from the US 1 junction. You will rarely need the drive, though. Nassau County divorces file electronically, documents move by email and phone, and mediation is usually scheduled privately. For many Callahan clients the courthouse is a place they see once, or never.

We also know the rhythms of the town. Kids at Callahan Elementary, Callahan Middle, and West Nassau High, a place out toward Bryceville, a small business on the highway, a long commute down US 1 or US 301. Time-sharing schedules and property values look different here than they do at the beach, and the settlement should reflect that. A parenting plan that keeps school-night routines steady and names a simple exchange spot in town tends to hold up better than one copied from a form.

What Happens, In Order

  • One free ten-minute call. No drive to anybody's office. If it makes sense to continue, the next step is a one-hour consultation with an attorney, $150 prepaid, and you leave it with your total fixed price in writing.
  • Filing with the Nassau County Clerk. We file your petition with the Nassau County Clerk of Courts, almost always electronically. The clerk's office is in Yulee, not Callahan, so the filing goes in online. Many Florida counties also enter a standing order at filing that sets ground rules for both spouses while the case is open, and we walk you through it if yours does.
  • Service and the 20-day clock. Your spouse is formally served and has 20 days to respond under Rule 12.140(a)(1).
  • Mandatory disclosure. Within 45 days, both sides exchange financial documents under Fla. Fam. L. R. P. 12.285. Paychecks, accounts, the truck, the retirement, all on the table. One more thing worth knowing: in a fully agreed case, your spouse typically accepts service instead of being formally served, and the two of you can often waive the document exchange by agreement, which is part of why agreed cases move faster.
  • Mediation, then the final hearing if needed. Most cases settle in private mediation with an experienced mediator both sides choose, and it can often happen by video. If yours needs a judge, we request a final hearing at the Robert M. Foster Justice Center, about half an hour east on SR 200.

Counselors and Financial Help Near Callahan

Even in a small town, the two people worth calling alongside a divorce lawyer are a counselor and someone who understands your money. Counseling gives you and your kids a steady place to land while the case moves, and it keeps hard feelings from turning into expensive positions. A CPA or planner helps untangle what is really marital, the house, a small business, retirement built over years of Jacksonville commutes, so the settlement rests on numbers instead of guesses. If faith is part of how you get through hard seasons, our Chaplain Care Service is available too.

Callahan Divorce Questions, Without the Runaround

Where do Callahan divorce cases get heard?

At the Robert M. Foster Justice Center in Yulee, roughly 30 minutes east. Most steps happen without the drive. Filing is electronic, and plenty of cases resolve at mediation before a courtroom ever enters the picture.

I work in Jacksonville. Do I file in Duval County or Nassau?

Usually Nassau. Where a case is filed generally follows where the two of you last lived together as a couple, not where the paycheck comes from. If one of you has since moved to Duval, ask us on the free call. It is one of the first things we confirm.

What is this going to cost me?

We quote one fixed price, in writing, before you hire us. The consultation is $150, prepaid, for a full hour with an attorney. You leave that meeting knowing the total for your case.

What if my spouse hides money?

Both spouses must exchange financial documents within 45 days under Rule 12.285. That is Fla. Fam. L. R. P. 12.285, and it applies whether or not anyone asks for the records. Pay stubs, tax returns, and account statements surface early, on a deadline.

Will one of us automatically get the kids most of the time?

No. Since July 1, 2023, Florida starts from a rebuttable presumption that equal time-sharing is in the children's best interest. Courts decide parental responsibility and time-sharing under Fla. Stat. § 61.13. Those are the terms the statutes use for what most people search as custody, and the presumption can be overcome with evidence.

How long does a divorce take in Nassau County?

A typical uncontested case runs about three months. Fla. Stat. § 61.19 allows a final judgment as early as 20 days after filing, though few cases move that fast. We scope a standard contested case at seven months or settlement. That is how we set the fixed price, not a promise about speed.
