Hilliard sits a long way from the courthouse and close to everybody who knows you. Whether you work at the FAA facility, the railroad, or in timber, or commute to Kings Bay across the state line, ending a marriage here raises two worries fast: the distance and the privacy. We handle most of a Hilliard divorce by phone, video, and e-filing, for one fixed price quoted in writing before you hire us.

One call gets it moving. Call Good Life Legal's Jacksonville office at 904-999-4010, or complete the form on this page and we will call you.

The Plain-English Answer for Hilliard

A Hilliard divorce is usually a Nassau County, Florida case. One spouse files a petition with the Nassau County Clerk of Courts stating the marriage is irretrievably broken. Florida is no-fault, so no one has to prove wrongdoing. Where you file matters here, because Georgia starts just up US 1. The court needs two things:

  • Grounds: the marriage must be irretrievably broken, the no-fault standard set by Fla. Stat. § 61.052.
  • Residency: at least one spouse must have lived in Florida for the six months before filing, under Fla. Stat. § 61.021.

Local pro tip: Hilliard is the farthest Nassau community from the courthouse, and it rarely matters. Filings go through the e-filing portal, and most Hilliard cases can run start to finish with few, if any, trips to Yulee.

Far From the Courthouse Is Not Far From Help

The Robert M. Foster Justice Center on Veterans Way in Yulee is roughly 35 to 40 minutes from Hilliard. That is the longest courthouse run in the county, which is exactly why we build our Hilliard work around not making it. Consultations happen by phone or video, filings go in electronically, and if a hearing is needed, we tell you plainly when the drive is worth it.

Small-town cases carry a local layer too. When the kids are at Hilliard Elementary and Hilliard Middle-Senior High, and the marital estate is a house on acreage, a truck, a pension, and a hunting lease, discretion and honest valuation matter as much as the paperwork. Time-sharing plans here often have to work around shift schedules at the FAA facility or a long drive to the base, and a plan that names a simple exchange spot, like the ballfields at North Oxford Park, saves arguments later.

The Path From Here to Final, Mostly From Your Kitchen Table

  • One free ten-minute call. Ten minutes from the porch, the truck, or a break room. If we are a fit, the next step is a one-hour consultation with an attorney, $150 prepaid, and you leave it with your total fixed price in writing.
  • Filing with the Nassau County Clerk. We file your petition with the Nassau County Clerk of Courts, almost always electronically. Nothing has to be hand-carried to Yulee. Many Florida counties also enter a standing order at filing that sets ground rules for both spouses while the case is open, and we walk you through it if yours does.
  • Service and the 20-day clock. Your spouse is formally served and has 20 days to respond under Rule 12.140(a)(1).
  • Mandatory disclosure. Within 45 days, both sides exchange financial documents under Fla. Fam. L. R. P. 12.285, pay stubs to pension paperwork. One more thing worth knowing: in a fully agreed case, your spouse typically accepts service instead of being formally served, and the two of you can often waive the document exchange by agreement, which is part of why agreed cases move faster.
  • Mediation, then the final hearing if needed. Most cases settle in private mediation with an experienced mediator both sides choose, and it can often happen by video. If yours needs a judge, we request a final hearing at the Robert M. Foster Justice Center in Yulee.

Counselors and Financial Help Near Hilliard

Divorce in a small town comes with an extra layer: everyone knows everyone, and privacy matters. A counselor, even by telehealth, gives you a confidential place to work through the transition, and gives your kids the same. Financial guidance matters just as much when the assets are a house on acreage, a pension, and a hunting lease as when they are stock portfolios. Someone has to value it all, and someone has to plan the budget for after. If faith is part of how you get through hard seasons, our Chaplain Care Service is available too.

What Hilliard Families Want to Know

Where are Hilliard divorce cases heard?

At the Robert M. Foster Justice Center in Yulee, roughly 35 to 40 minutes away. Filing is electronic and mediation can often happen by video, so most of the case never requires the trip.

My spouse lives across the line in Georgia. Do I file in Florida or Georgia?

If Florida has been your home for at least the last six months, you can usually file here. That is the residency rule in Fla. Stat. § 61.021. The two states handle property and parenting differently, and where the case lands can shape both. Get it answered before either of you files.

Will everyone in town find out?

Court files are generally public records, but much of a divorce happens in private. Mediation is generally confidential, and we work by phone and video, so your business stays as private as the process allows while the case moves.

Does my spouse automatically get half my military retirement?

No. Florida has no automatic half. Kings Bay commuters ask us this often. The marital share of a military pension is divided under Fla. Stat. § 61.075 as part of equitable distribution, and military retirement adds federal rules of its own.

Will one of us automatically get the kids most of the time?

No. Since July 1, 2023, Florida starts from a rebuttable presumption that equal time-sharing is in the children's best interest. Courts decide parental responsibility and time-sharing under Fla. Stat. § 61.13. Those are the terms the statutes use for what most people search as custody, and the presumption can be overcome with evidence.

How long will it take?

A typical uncontested case runs about three months. Fla. Stat. § 61.19 allows a final judgment as early as 20 days after filing, though few cases move that fast. We scope a standard contested case at seven months or settlement. That is how we set the fixed price, not a promise about speed.
